Statistics on the Frequency of Dog Bites

According to an in-depth analysis of 799 dog bites reported to the Florida Department of Health in Bay County, Florida between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2010:

  • Children under 6 years old and boys between 6–14 years old were the two groups with the highest risk of being bitten by a dog. 
  • 86 percent of dog bites involving children under 6 years old were from dogs familiar to the family, and more than 50 percent occurred in the home.
  • More than a third of children less than 6 years old was unknown, suggesting some young children may have been unsupervised when in contact with dogs.
  • 55 percent of dog bites involving individuals 15 years and older happened when the victim tried to break up a dog fight. This occurred more often in the home or at the dog owner’s property, but also occurred frequently off the property. 
  • The most common cause of dog bites in all age groups (26 percent) was inappropriate behavior management such as interacting with the dog while it was playing with a chew toy, eating food, roughhousing, or touching or moving the dog against its will. 71 of these incidents occurred in the dog owner’s home or on their property. 
  • 24 percent of dog bites were caused by protective behavior both on and off the dog owner’s property. 
  • Dogs found off of their owner’s property and off-leash were the source of 32 percent of all reported dog bites, 89 percent involved dogs unknown to the victim.
